As AFL Communications continues coverage from the Super Bowl XLVI Media Center in Indianapolis, Kurt Warner caught up with the League that gave him a chance.
EDITOR: Another year, another Super Bowl. How do you like Indianapolis?
KURT WARNER: You know, I like it. I think it’s a great setup for the Super Bowl. So much of the Super Bowl is getting around and seeing the people. Because everything is so compact and together here, I think it’s great. I’ve been able to walk to different places and mingle with the fans and be a part of everything. I think they’ve done a tremendous job. The weather being nice hasn’t hurt.
ED: AFL wise, it has been a big year for yourself. You were broadcasting ArenaBowl XXIV and during the broadcast, you were named to the AFL Hall of Fame. How did that feel?
KW: All of those things are humbling. It was a pleasure to play in the Arena League and to be a representative of the AFL as I’ve moved on to do other things. It’s a tremendous honor. Regardless of where it is or what it is, whenever the Hall of Fame is connected, it is a tremendous honor to have that behind your name. I was surprise, having only played a few years. I was very proud of my career starting in the AFL and I can kind of lend my name to the Arena Football League to inspire other guys to say, ‘Hey! It might not always look like you want it to look. Your circumstances might not look like it right now but there is hope to accomplish your dreams. That is so much what that arena time and moving to the NFL meant to me. I’m always going to stay connected. It was a huge part on why I’m here. The AFL gave me an opportunity first. I will never forget that.
ED: With that, a few of us arena football guys noticed you changed your Twitter picture recently. I like the throwback Warner in an Iowa Barnstormers jersey!
KW: I like to keep it changed up! Somebody actually sent me that picture. I’m not sure where they got that picture and I said, ‘Why not? This would be a fun way to go old school and bounce it around a bit!’ I still remember those old days fondly. I still have a number of things and memorabilia items from that time. I came across that picture and I thought people would enjoy it. People that love arena football, I received a lot of comments on it. The people that didn’t know about it, I had a lot of comments about those uniforms from way back then. The propellers on the pants, goggles on the helmets, people love it.
ED: Obviously, it’s a big week. You’re here with NFL Network, tell me a little bit about what you are up to.
KW: I’ve been working with NFL Network for a couple of years now. That’s the primary gig, you come down to the Super Bowl, everybody is here and you cover the game. I’m looking forward to that. Being I was with the Giants, I know Eli and Coach Tom Coughlin and a few other people. It’s been nice to get to hang out with them a little bit. You also get into other things along the way including other events.
ED: Kurt, a gracious thank you from AFL Communications and Arena Football Nation for joining us today.
