Don’t call them a “Dream Team,” but like their MLB and NFL counterparts, Philadelphia’s Arena Football franchise has gone all out in free agency in hopes of bringing home a championship trophy.
After naming Doug Plank the team’s new Head Coach in late August, Philadelphia got off to a fast start in the free agency period, not only bringing back a handful of players from last season’s roster, but also adding top talent from around the League. And while the Phillies and Eagles didn’t cash in as expected following their offseason acquisitions, the Soul anticipate their big name free agent assignments will provide the spark necessary to get them back to dominance.
“Philly wants to win and I think I, along with my teammates who came over, can help,” recently assigned fullback Derrick Ross said. “We’re going to try to win the championship.”
Ross, who was named First Team All-Arena as a rookie in 2011 after setting the AFL single-season record for rushing yards with 622, is one of several former Dallas Vigilantes to move to Philly for 2012.
The Tarleton State alum says that despite taking the League by storm last season, he knows he won’t fly under the radar in his sophomore campaign.
“It’s only going to get harder,” Ross said. “That’s why I’m working out a little bit harder and really treating my body right, so I can be better than I was last year. Last year was a stepping stone. It was my rookie year, so this year I’m planning on doing better.”
But while teams will undoubtedly have their hands full trying to stop the 6-foot, 250 pound fullback, Philadelphia also acquired a handful of other weapons this offseason that might just prove to be too much for opposing defenses to handle.
Not only did the Soul bring back top receivers Donovan Morgan – a Second Team All-Arena selection in 2011, who ranks in the top three of nearly every franchise receiving record – and Larry Brackins – a key piece of the team’s 2008 ArenaBowl championship squad – but they also added quarterback Dan Raudabaugh, receiver Anthony “Tiger” Jones and all-purpose man Jeff Hughley early in the free agency period. In addition, the team nabbed former Dallas Head Coach Clint Dolezel to be the team’s new Offensive Coordinator and bolstered their defense with the assignments of defensive lineman Dustin Barno, linebacker Joe Goosby and defensive back Tanner Varner.
But it’s the plethora of weapons assembled on the offensive side of the ball that has caused people to take notice.
The addition of Dan Raudabaugh under center should bring some consistency to the quarterback position, something the squad lacked for much of the 2011 season. In his first full year as a starter in 2011, Raudabaugh had a breakout season, passing for nearly 5,000-yards and 90 touchdowns. And with the additions of Jones – Raudabaugh’s top target last season in Dallas and the Cutters Wide Receiver of the Year for 2011, who led the League in yards, receptions and yards per game last season – and Hughley – a back-to-back All-Ironman selection – as well as Morgan and Brackins, Raudabaugh’s numbers should only go up.
How that will affect Derrick Ross’ production is anyone’s guess, but the record-setting running back isn’t too concerned about his numbers.
“I really don’t know [how the running game will be affected by the additions],” Ross said. “All I know is when I get my hands on the ball, I have to do something with it, no matter the carries.”
Ross says he’ll leave the play-calling decisions to his Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator.
Certainly, Plank and Dolezel will have some tough decisions to make in regards to personnel and play-calling, but having an embarrassment of riches in the talent department isn’t necessarily a bad problem to have.
As far as the whole “Philadelphia Dream Team” talk goes, Ross prefers to laugh it off and keep things in perspective.
“We’re just going to say ‘team that wants to win.’” Ross said. “We haven’t won anything yet. You never know what might happen. You just have to go out there and have everybody give 100 percent effort.”
Ross says the biggest challenge will be getting everyone on the same page before the start of the season. But if that happens and everything goes according to plan for the Soul, Philadelphia might just be the team to beat in 2012.
